Interstate movers for Bay Area households leaving California
Moving out of state from the Bay Area? Interstate moves priced by weight with a minimum space reservation, delivered within 30 days. US DOT 1783494.

Crossing a state line from the Bay Area
An interstate move is any move where the truck leaves California for another state. It falls under federal rules instead of the California hourly tariff, so it is priced and scheduled differently from a local move. Spartan Moving Systems handles interstate moves that start in California under US DOT 1783494, with interstate operating authority MC 650181 printed on our contract. We do not take moves between two other states, or moves that start outside California.
Where Bay Area households asked to go in 2026
From mid-July to late October 2026, the interstate moves we quoted from the Bay Area were headed to Illinois, Arizona, Washington, Nevada, Oregon and New York. Three of them booked: a Peninsula home to Chicago, an East Bay home to the Phoenix area and a Peninsula home to an island near Seattle. Small numbers, but they show the spread: some families go one state over, others go coast to coast.
How an interstate move is priced
Interstate moves are not billed by the hour. Your written estimate lists three numbers: the estimated weight of your shipment, the rate per pound, and a minimum space reservation. The minimum works like the 3-hour minimum on a local move: if the shipment weighs less, you still pay for the minimum. If it weighs more, the extra pounds (the overload) are billed at the same rate per pound. The final price follows the actual weight, which is why a weight estimate is non-binding.
The rate per pound depends on the route and the shipment, so we do not publish one; it is written on your estimate before you book. If you would rather have one fixed number, ask about a flat fee for a reserved truck: a binding price for a truck reserved only for your shipment, with the same team loading and unloading and guaranteed pickup and delivery dates.
Delivery: the policy and the averages
| What it means | |
|---|---|
| Policy | Delivery within 30 days from your first available date |
| West Coast average | 3 to 7 days |
| Mountain and Central average | 7 to 10 days |
| East Coast average | 10 to 14 days |
| Reserved truck, flat fee | Pickup and delivery dates guaranteed |
The 30-day window is the written policy on a weight-based interstate move. Most moves arrive well inside it, but plan your housing so a delivery near the end of the window does not leave you without furniture.
What can be added at delivery
On a weight-based interstate move, the delivery end can include extra services when the home needs them. Each one is written on your estimate:
- Stairs beyond the first flight (7 steps count as a flight)
- A long carry beyond the first 100 feet from the truck to the door
- Elevator use
- A shuttle, when a full-size truck cannot reach the address
Tell us about stairs, elevators, long walks and parking at the new home before the estimate so these are planned instead of discovered. None of them apply to a flat-fee reserved truck.
Included in the interstate rate
- Loading and unloading, with furniture taken apart and put back together
- Moving blankets, tape, shrink wrap and mattress covers
- Packing of bulky fragile items
- Labeling and an inventory list of every item
- All mileage, taxes and tolls; no extra fee for weekend moves
- Basic valuation at $0.60 per pound per article
Full packing of every box is available as an add-on. Unpacking at the new home is not included. For more coverage than basic valuation, buy full-value protection from Baker International at bakerintl.com with our mover ID 17421.
Paying for an interstate move
Half is due on the day of pickup and half on delivery, by cash, money order, Visa or Mastercard. Card payments carry a 3% fee, and a card payment for delivery is due one day before the truck arrives. Returning customers and real-estate-agent referrals get 7% off, and friend referrals 5%.
Getting an accurate interstate estimate
- Book a free on-site survey. Weight is hard to judge from a phone call, and we do not do video estimates.
- Walk the estimator through every room, closet, garage and storage unit.
- Point out what you will sell, donate or leave behind. Every pound you shed lowers the price.
- Describe access at the new home: stairs, elevator, distance from the curb, and whether a large truck can park.
- Decide whether you want full packing, since it changes both the weight and the price.

Questions and answers
How long does an interstate move take?
Delivery is within 30 days from your first available date. On average, West Coast moves take 3 to 7 days, Mountain and Central 7 to 10 days, and East Coast 10 to 14 days.
Is an interstate estimate binding?
A weight-based estimate is non-binding, because the final price follows the actual weight. A flat fee for a reserved truck is binding.
What happens if my shipment is heavier than estimated?
The extra weight is billed at the same rate per pound. The rate does not go up on an overload.
