Cross-country to the Midwest

Chicago is about 2,130 miles from San Francisco, a true cross-country trip. In 2026 we booked a Peninsula to Chicago move and quoted a Santa Clara studio going the same way. The booked move started at storage units rather than a house and ended at a downtown high-rise, two situations worth planning for on this route.

Pickups from a storage unit

Some customers have already packed and stored everything before the move. Drive-up storage units are a straightforward pickup: the truck parks at the unit and the crew loads directly. Some storage facilities do not allow portable containers, which is one reason people ask a mover to load straight onto the truck. Send the facility name, unit numbers, sizes and gate hours, and whether the goods are already packed and wrapped.

High-rise delivery in Chicago

Downtown buildings usually require a reserved elevator, a loading dock time and a certificate of insurance. When a large truck cannot get close to the building, a shuttle may be needed. On a weight-based interstate move, elevators, long carries over 100 feet, stairs beyond the first flight and shuttles can be charged as extra services; we flag the likely ones in your estimate.

How the move is priced

The estimate is by weight: estimated weight times the rate per pound, with a minimum space reservation. Overload is charged at the same rate. The estimate is non-binding, so the final bill follows the actual weight. A reserved truck at a binding flat fee is the alternative: guaranteed dates, same team at both ends, no warehouse transfers. We do not publish per-pound rates; yours is in writing before you book.

What the price includes

Loading and unloading, disassembly and reassembly, blankets, labeling and an inventory list, all mileage, tax and tolls, and no weekend fees. Unpacking is not included. Basic valuation is $0.60 per pound per article at no charge; full value protection is available through Baker International.

Payment

You pay half at pickup and half at delivery, by cash, money order, Visa or Mastercard. Cards carry a 3% fee.

Winter moves to Chicago

Chicago winters bring snow, ice and short days. If your delivery falls between December and March, plan for slower unloading, keep walkways clear at the new building, and protect floors from wet boots. Blankets and floor protection are part of the service, but salt and slush are easier to deal with when the building has a covered dock.

Questions and answers

Can you pick up from my storage unit for a Chicago move?

Yes. Send the facility, unit numbers and gate hours. Drive-up units are loaded directly onto the truck.

Will there be a shuttle charge at my Chicago high-rise?

Possibly. If the truck cannot get close to the building, a shuttle may be needed and is charged on weight-based interstate moves. We note it in the estimate when it is likely.

How long does delivery to Chicago take?

Typically 7 to 10 days to Central states, within a 30-day policy window.

Can I get a binding price?

Yes, by reserving a dedicated truck at a flat fee.

Do you deliver to Chicago in winter?

Yes. Plan for weather with clear walkways and a booked dock or elevator.
