What the California permit means for you

A licensed California mover has to follow the state's maximum rate tariff (Max 4). That is where several rules on your quote come from:

  • A written contract. Your move runs on an Agreement for Moving Services (Item 450 of the tariff). Ours is an electronic version you initial and sign on the foreman's phone when the crew arrives, and a PDF copy is emailed to you.
  • A not-to-exceed price. When you book a free on-site inspection, you get a not-to-exceed price, so you know your maximum before the crew starts.
  • The Important Notice About Your Move. The state notice (Item 465) is part of the agreement you sign.
  • Double drive time. On hourly moves, the drive between your pickup and drop-off is counted twice when they are more than 10 minutes apart. The drive to your first address is not charged. See double drive time explained.
  • Valuation choices. The contract lists the valuation options and you initial the one you pick.
  • Claims in writing. Our terms give you 9 months to file a claim in writing.
03

Our own insurance

Spartan carries general liability, auto liability, cargo and workers' compensation insurance, and files its certificates with the Bureau as the California permit requires. We have our own workers' compensation for our own crew. We do not use a staffing agency or subcontract local moves, so the people in your home are Spartan employees covered by our policy.

If your building needs specific limits on a certificate, send us the requirement before you book and we will confirm whether our certificate meets it.

04

Free certificate of insurance (COI) for your building

Many condo buildings, HOAs and offices will not let a mover in without a certificate of insurance naming them. There is no fee. Send us:

  • The HOA or management company name, as it should appear on the certificate
  • The mailing address of the HOA or management company
  • The email address the certificate should go to

We submit the request to our insurance agent right away and send the certificate as soon as it is ready. Ask for it when you book, not the day before. We have issued certificates to about 300 Bay Area buildings and HOAs where we have moved customers. More detail: moving into an HOA building.
