01

A village at the end of the tunnel

West Portal takes its name from the spot where Muni streetcars come out of the Twin Peaks Tunnel. West Portal Avenue, running from the station down toward St. Francis Circle, is a compact main street with a bookstore, a movie theater, restaurants and family businesses. The residential blocks spread out on both sides along Ulloa, Vicente, Portola and the curving streets toward Forest Hill and St. Francis Wood. It feels more like a small town than a city district.

02

Detached homes with character

Most homes were built in the 1920s and 1930s, many as detached or nearly detached houses, which is less common in San Francisco. Styles lean toward Mediterranean, Mission and Tudor revival, with stucco fronts, arched entries and tiled steps. A typical house puts the garage at the street and the main floor up a short stair, with bedrooms on the same level or above. Some streets toward Forest Hill climb steeply, so the front stair can be long.

Arched doorways and curved stair walls are attractive and narrow, so we take legs off tables and headboards off beds before they reach those openings. Floor runners protect old hardwood and tile from the door to every room we enter.

03

Rail lines and hillside curbs

Streetcar tracks run along West Portal Avenue and through St. Francis Circle, and a truck may never sit in a rail lane. On the residential side streets, driveways leave short gaps of curb. The truck is 26 feet and needs about 40 feet of space to set its ramp. When legal parking is not possible, our San Francisco permit guide explains how a temporary space is processed.

04

Moving out of a long-time family home

Leaving a house you have owned for many years is rarely just a furniture job. Basements and garages hold tools, holiday decorations and boxes that have not been opened in years. Sort those first, decide what goes to the new home, and set aside what will be donated. The crew moves what you choose, and packing materials are billed only as used. If you want help packing the kitchen or the china, we can do that hourly.

05

The citywide view

West Portal's ZIP, 94127, which it shares with St. Francis Wood and Forest Hill, gave us a single request in our latest data, too few to describe. Across San Francisco we had 43 non-account quote requests between mid-July and late October 2026; 28 of them booked or completed. Three-bedroom homes accounted for 5 of those requests.

How we price a West Portal house

For a two- or three-bedroom house, three movers at $175 per hour is the norm. A home with three bedrooms over 1,800 square feet, or four bedrooms or more, gets four movers at $235. Two movers at $145 cover a very small move. Every job starts with a 3-hour minimum and continues in 15-minute increments, and weekends cost the same as weekdays.

From a studio to four bedrooms: West Portal move costs

For planning, we sorted our latest local moves by home size and read off the billed hours. These are typical ranges, not quotes, and local moves are billed by the hour, never as a flat price.

Home sizeCrewTypical hoursTypical cost
Studio3 movers, $175/hr3.5 to 4 hours$613 to $700
1 bedroom3 movers, $175/hr3 to 4.5 hours$525 to $788
2 bedrooms3 movers, $175/hr4.5 to 7.75 hours$788 to $1,356
3 bedrooms, under about 1,800 sq ft3 movers, $175/hr7 to 12.5 hours$1,225 to $2,188
3 bedrooms over about 1,800 sq ft, or 4+ bedrooms4 movers, $235/hr7 to 12.5 hours$1,645 to $2,938

Middle 50% of billed hours on recent local moves for direct customers (July to October 2026), with the drive between homes counted as billed. Account and partner-billed jobs and moves that included our full packing are not in these numbers. Packing supplies extra; 3-hour minimum.

A garage at the street with the main floor up a short stair is the usual layout, but on the steeper streets toward Forest Hill the front stair gets long and adds time per trip.

07

Our route from San Jose

West Portal is about 42 miles northwest of downtown San Jose, a straightforward run up I-280. You are not billed for the drive in. San Francisco moves have a 9 to 11 AM arrival window, and the foreman calls about 30 minutes before arrival. When the new address is more than 10 minutes away, the drive between the two is doubled under California rules; a move to St. Francis Wood or the Sunset typically stays within 10 minutes.

08

West Portal checklist

  • Measure arched doorways and the stair from the garage before deciding what goes.
  • Tell us if your street is steep or ends in a stair path.
  • Clear the garage of cars so it can serve as a staging spot.
  • Plan the curb space early, especially near West Portal Avenue.
  • Grand pianos always need four movers, so mention one when you call.
