What makes it different02 · Planning notes

Two Richmonds, two kinds of move

East of Park Presidio, the Inner Richmond is denser. Many buildings are Edwardian flats or small apartment buildings, often with a shared front entry, a long interior staircase and, sometimes, no elevator at all. Clement Street and Geary Boulevard are busy commercial streets, so a move from an apartment above a storefront needs a parking plan.

West of Park Presidio, the Outer Richmond looks more like the Sunset: long rows of homes with the garage at street level and the living floor above. Streets are quieter and more open, but driveways cut the curb into short pieces. Closer to the ocean, fog and wind are part of the day, and we wrap furniture in moving blankets for every carry.

Richmond District move checklist

  1. Find out whether your building has an elevator, and if so, whether it must be reserved. We provide a certificate of insurance when management asks for one.
  2. For homes over garages, clear the garage and decide whether the crew will load through it or up the front steps.
  3. Reserve curb space if your block has little of it. The SFMTA handles temporary no-parking signs; the SF parking permit guide has the details. Reservations are by length of curb, so measure for the truck.
  4. Avoid planning the truck on Geary's bus lanes or at a bus stop. A side street is usually the better place to reserve.
  5. Check the street-cleaning signs on your block before you choose a time.
  6. If the new place is not ready, line up packing and storage so your things have somewhere to wait.
  7. Label boxes by room and floor, especially in a two-unit building.

Richmond District
moving FAQ.

How do I know if my building needs a certificate of insurance?

Ask your property manager or HOA. Larger apartment and condo buildings often require one. If they do, send us the requirements and we provide the COI.

Is it harder to move in the Inner Richmond or the Outer Richmond?

They are different rather than harder. The Inner Richmond has more walk-up flats and busy commercial streets; the Outer Richmond has row homes over garages and shorter stretches of open curb between driveways.

Can the truck park on Geary Boulevard?

We avoid bus lanes and stops. For an address on Geary, a reserved spot on the nearest side street is usually the better plan.

How much does a Richmond District move cost?

It is $145-185 an hour for 3 movers, with a 3-hour minimum and packing materials billed as used. The final rate depends on date and availability.

Can you move us across Golden Gate Park to the Sunset?

Yes. It is a short drive through or around the park. Most of the time on a move like that goes into stairs and loading at each end rather than the drive.

Do you offer storage between homes?

Yes. We can pack, move your belongings into storage and deliver them when the new home is ready.

How far ahead should I reserve parking?

Applying a week or more ahead is a safe target for SFMTA temporary no-parking signs. Confirm the posting window and fees at sfmta.com.
