Naglee Park is one of the older residential neighborhoods in San Jose, and most of its houses went up in the early decades of the twentieth century. The streets are on a flat grid, which makes the drive and the parking simpler than the house itself. Inside, the rooms were built before king beds and sectionals: doorways are narrower, staircases are steeper, and many homes still have their original hardwood floors.
Because the university is next door, the neighborhood mixes long-time owners with renters. Some of the larger old houses have been divided into several units, which can mean a shared front door, a tight interior stair or an exterior staircase added later. A family home here and a student unit two doors down are very different jobs, so we ask about the layout before we quote.
Movers also run into a calendar effect. The weeks around the start and end of the semester bring a lot of moves to these blocks at the same time, and the curb fills up faster.

Two or three weeks out, go through this list:
A few things we keep in mind on these blocks:
Rates are hourly: 2 movers $145, 3 movers $175, 4 movers $235, with a 3-hour minimum and packing materials billed only as used. A one-bedroom unit in a divided house usually needs a smaller crew than a full bungalow with an attic and a garage.
Full-service moves come with floor protection, moving blankets, tape, wardrobe boxes and furniture disassembly and reassembly, which matters a lot when a piece is wider than the doorway. Antiques and heirlooms are covered on our packing services page, and the moving cost guide explains how the hours add up.
In most cases, yes. We take apart beds, tables and other furniture that comes apart, and we measure the tight spots before move day. Tell us about any very large pieces when you ask for a quote.
Yes. Floor protection is included on every full-service move, from the entry to each room we work in.
2 movers are $145 an hour, 3 movers $175 an hour and 4 movers $235 an hour, with a 3-hour minimum, plus packing materials used.
Yes. Smaller moves still have the 3-hour minimum, and the start and end of the semester book up fast, so reserve early.
Only if the truck has to hold curb space on a city street. San Jose's Department of Transportation issues a Tow-Away Permit for that. Apply about two weeks ahead and confirm current rules with the city.
Downtown San Jose is just to the west past the campus, Japantown is a short drive north, and the older homes of the Rose Garden and Willow Glen are across town to the west and southwest.
