Homes tucked into the Oakland hills on narrow, winding roads, many reached by steep driveways or stairs down from the street. Answers to what people ask before a Montclair move.
Call toll free1-877-417-6060In the Oakland hills, east of Piedmont, with most addresses in ZIP 94611. Montclair Village, the neighborhood's small shopping district, sits beside Highway 13, and the residential streets climb from there up toward Skyline Boulevard.
Highway 13 runs along the bottom of the neighborhood and connects to Highway 24 to the north and Interstate 580 to the south. Joaquin Miller Park and Redwood Regional Park cover much of the ridge nearby.
Almost all single-family houses, built into the hillside. Some sit level with the road, but many are set well above it with a steep driveway, or below it, reached by a staircase down from the street. Split-level layouts and stairs inside the house are common too.
It depends on the block. Some Montclair streets are wide enough for a full-size truck to pull up to the house. Others are one narrow lane each way, with parked cars, sharp bends and nowhere to turn around at the end. On those, a smaller truck or a shuttle from a wider spot is safer, and we decide that from your address before the day of the move.
If the truck has to hold curb space on a public street, Oakland issues an Obstruction (OB) permit through OakDOT, with No Parking signs posted 72 hours ahead. On many hill lots the truck loads from the driveway or a wide shoulder, and the main job is keeping the road passable for neighbors and emergency vehicles.
Count the steps between the street and your door, note how steep the driveway is, and list heavy items such as safes, pianos, gym equipment and big outdoor pieces. Move cars out of the driveway and off the road in front of the house on move morning.
The village blocks are the flattest part of the neighborhood, with shops, restaurants and steady parking turnover. Homes close by are usually the simplest Montclair moves, though the curb in front of the shops is busy on weekends, so we load from the quieter residential side.

Many Montclair moves start or end somewhere very different, down the hill or over the ridge:
| Area | Typical homes | Terrain | Planning focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Montclair | Houses built into the slope | Narrow hill roads | Stairs below or above the road |
| Rockridge | Bungalows, shingle houses, duplexes | Flat, rising to the east | Curb space off College Avenue |
| Lake Merritt | Apartment buildings and towers | Flat | Elevators, COIs, OB permit |
| Piedmont | Large older single-family homes | Rolling hills | Long carries, careful handling |
| Orinda | Single-family homes on larger lots | Hilly | Driveways and grades |

In Montclair the rate is the same as anywhere else we work: 2 movers at $145 an hour, 3 at $175 and 4 at $235, 3-hour minimum, plus whatever packing materials get used. What changes the total here is the walk: a staircase down to the front door or a truck parked around the bend adds trips, so we ask about both when quoting.
Floor protection, moving blankets, tape, wardrobe boxes and furniture disassembly and reassembly are part of every full-service move. Scooters, bikes and garage gear are wrapped and loaded too. Pianos have their own page at piano movers, and the moving cost guide breaks down the hours.
Piedmont is just west, Rockridge and Lake Merritt are a short drive down Highway 13 and Highway 24 or Interstate 580, and Orinda is over the ridge on the far side of the Caldecott Tunnel.

Often, yes. Where a road is too narrow or winding for a full-size truck, we bring a smaller one or park on a wider stretch and carry from there. Give us your street when you ask for a quote.

Yes. Tell us roughly how many steps there are and whether there are landings, and we size the crew so heavy pieces go up the stairs safely.
We can. Let us know what it is, roughly what it weighs and every step between it and the street, so the crew arrives with enough people and the right dollies and straps.
