Apartment buildings old and new ring the lake, from walk-ups with no elevator to towers with a booked freight elevator and a COI on file. This is how a move near the lake comes together.

Lake Merritt is a tidal lagoon in the middle of Oakland, connected to the estuary, with a walking path around the shore and Lakeside Park on its north side. The neighborhoods around it are some of the densest in the East Bay: Adams Point on the northwest shore, Grand Lake to the northeast, Eastlake along the east side, and Downtown and Uptown Oakland just to the west.
Addresses use several ZIP codes. Most of Adams Point and Grand Lake are 94610, the downtown side of the lake is 94612, and Eastlake is largely 94606. Grand Avenue and Lakeshore Avenue are the main shopping streets, Lakeside Drive and Harrison Street run along the west side, and Interstate 580 passes just above Grand Lake. The Lake Merritt BART station is a few blocks from the south end of the lake.
Most moves here are apartment moves. The building, not the street, sets most of the rules: when you can move, which door and elevator to use, and what insurance paperwork has to be on file first.
Whether your building has a manager on site or a small owner down the street, this is the order we work in:
Find out the allowed move days and hours, whether there is a service elevator or freight entrance, and whether a deposit or a certificate of insurance is required. Get it in writing if you can.
Forward the COI wording for your current and new buildings. We send the certificate to each manager so the move is cleared on both ends.
Few buildings here have a loading dock, so most moves use the street. Oakland issues an Obstruction (OB) permit through OakDOT to hold curb space, and the No Parking signs must be posted 72 hours before the move.
Sunny weekends draw big crowds to the lake, and events in Lakeside Park and Downtown add traffic. If your date lands on a busy weekend, we plan an early start.
The crew checks in with the manager, pads the elevator if there is one, and lays floor protection through the hallway and lobby. Furniture is wrapped in moving blankets inside the unit.
In a walk-up, we stage boxes on each landing and keep one person on the stairs. With an elevator, items wait near the doors so every trip goes down full. The new place is set up room by room.
Moves are billed hourly: $145 for 2 movers, $175 for 3 movers and $235 for 4 movers, with a 3-hour minimum and packing materials as used. Elevator waits and long hallways count toward the time, so a reserved elevator and a held curb save money.
Floor protection, moving blankets, tape, wardrobe boxes and furniture disassembly and reassembly are part of every full-service move. If you would rather hand off the packing, see packing services; for how the hours add up, see the moving cost guide.

Many of the buildings around the lake are older multi-story apartments. Some have a small elevator, some none at all. Tell us the floor and whether a sofa has to go up the stairs.
Taller buildings along the shore and toward Downtown usually have a front desk, set move hours and a booked elevator, and most ask for a COI first.
Smaller buildings on the side streets of Adams Point and Eastlake are almost always stairs. The crew size depends on the floor and the stair width.
Behind Grand Avenue and Lakeshore, the streets climb toward Piedmont, with single-family homes, front steps and sloped driveways.

Yes. Send us the building's requirements and we provide the COI directly to the manager, for both your current building and the new one.
In most cases, yes, since few buildings here have a loading dock. Oakland issues an Obstruction (OB) permit through OakDOT, and the No Parking signs must go up 72 hours before the move.
$145 an hour for 2 movers, $175 for 3 movers and $235 for 4 movers, with a 3-hour minimum, plus packing materials used. Elevator waiting time counts toward the hours.
Yes. Walk-ups are common around the lake. Tell us the floor and about any large pieces, and we size the crew for the stairs.
Not necessarily, but sunny weekends are busy around the lake. An early start helps with traffic and curb space.
Temescal and Rockridge are a short drive north up Broadway and College, Piedmont is just up the hill from Grand Lake, and Alameda is across the estuary through the Posey and Webster Street tubes.
