Between the park and Buena Vista

Haight-Ashbury runs from the east end of Golden Gate Park toward Buena Vista Park, with the Panhandle along its northern edge and Cole Valley and Ashbury Heights rising to the south. Haight Street is the spine: vintage clothing, record shops, cafes and a steady flow of visitors who come for the neighborhood's 1960s history. A block off the commercial strip it turns residential and quiet, crossed by Masonic, Ashbury, Clayton, Cole, Shrader and Stanyan.

Raised entries and narrow stairwells

Most of the housing is Victorian and Edwardian, built in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and a large share of those houses were long ago divided into two or three flats or a handful of apartments. Entrances sit above a raised basement, so even the lowest unit usually begins with a run of exterior steps. Upstairs, the stairwells are narrow, the landings are short and original banisters do not take kindly to a dresser swinging past.

Bay-window parlors are roomy; the halls that lead to them are not. Our crew wraps every piece in moving blankets, lays runners over old hardwood, and takes apart bed frames, dining tables and sectionals that will not clear a turn. All of that is part of a full-service move at no added charge.

Parking on a street people actually use

Haight Street carries buses and heavy foot traffic, and the side streets are lined with parked cars and garage doors that chop the curb into short pieces. Our 26-foot truck needs roughly 40 feet of open curb with the ramp down. Where there is no legal space, a temporary permit can be processed through SFMTA; the SF parking permit guide walks through it. A double-parking ticket is added to the bill, which is the main reason we plan the space before the day.

The drive up from San Jose

Our crews start in San Jose, about 43 miles southeast of the Panhandle, and you are not billed for that trip. The morning arrival window for San Francisco is 9 to 11 AM, and the foreman phones about 30 minutes ahead. Drive time between your two addresses is doubled only when they sit more than 10 minutes apart, as California rules require; a hop to Cole Valley or the Inner Sunset usually stays under that line.

What San Francisco asked us for this year

The 94117 ZIP sent too few requests on its own to report, so here is the citywide picture instead. From mid-July to late October 2026 we received 43 quote requests from San Francisco, not counting account work, and 28 of them booked or completed. One-bedroom homes led with 13, then two-bedroom homes with 12, followed by 6 studios. All but 3 were local moves.

Hourly rates for a Haight flat

A one- or two-bedroom flat up a flight or two is normally a three-mover job at $175 an hour. Two movers at $145 make sense only for a very small load or when you ask for it, and four at $235 is for a three-bedroom over 1,800 square feet or anything with four bedrooms. Three hours is the minimum, then billing runs in 15-minute steps at the same rate on Saturday as on Tuesday. Stairs cost time, never a surcharge.

Typical Haight-Ashbury move by home size

The hourly rate alone says little about the total, so we sorted our latest local moves by home size and turned the hours into the cost ranges below. Your home may land outside them. The total is always the hours used times the crew rate.

Source: final invoices on our own local moves for direct customers, July to October 2026, middle half of each size group, not counting account or partner-billed jobs or jobs where we packed the whole home. Materials are billed as used; minimum 3 hours, then 15-minute increments.

For a top-floor Haight flat, count on the upper half of your row. Drawers emptied, beds stripped and the shared stairwell clear before we arrive all help.

Before the crew climbs your steps

  • Count the exterior steps and the interior flights at both addresses and include them in your request.
  • Ask the other flats in the building to keep the shared stairwell clear that morning.
  • Measure the tightest landing if you own a large sofa or a box spring.
  • Decide early whether a curb permit is needed so the space is ready.
  • Empty dresser drawers and pack fragile items from the bay-window shelves.

Questions and answers

My flat is on the third floor with no elevator. Is that extra?

No. There is no stair fee. Carrying up and down flights takes longer, and you pay the hourly rate for that time.

Can you move just one room out of a shared flat?

Yes. Two movers at $145 an hour can handle a very small load, still with the 3-hour minimum.

Will you protect the old banister and hardwood?

Floor runners and blankets are included. We look at fragile railings during the estimate and plan how to carry around them.

Do I have to be home to pay at the end?

Payment is due when the job finishes, by cash, money order, Visa or Mastercard. Cards carry a 3% fee and we do not take checks.

Can you take the TV off the wall?

We dismount TVs and can connect and set them up at the new place. We do not mount TVs on walls.
