South County to the city

Gilroy sits at the south end of Santa Clara County, about 32 miles down US-101 from downtown San Jose. People make this move for a shorter commute, and it often starts at a house with a yard, a garage full of tools and sometimes a barn or shed.

How a 30-plus mile local move is billed

It is still a local move. You pay by the hour for the crew and truck, with a 3-hour minimum and 15-minute steps after that. The drive between your Gilroy home and your San Jose home is counted twice, because it is far longer than 10 minutes.

So if the drive takes 45 minutes, it is billed as 1.5 hours, which is $262.50 with 3 movers at $175 an hour. Everything else on the bill is the time spent loading and unloading.

Timing against the commute

Weekday mornings, northbound 101 from Gilroy is a commuter road, and it often slows near Coyote Valley. The crew loads in Gilroy during the morning, so the drive usually falls after the peak. The arrival window at a Gilroy pickup is 8 to 10 AM, and the crew calls about 30 minutes before.

Rural and large-lot pickups

  • Gravel or long private driveways: send a photo of the approach. If the 26 ft truck cannot get close, David tells you before move day whether a shuttle is needed.
  • Garages and sheds: empty gas from mowers and blowers. Hazardous materials do not go on the truck.
  • Heavy items such as safes or equipment over 300 lbs: send a photo first so David can confirm.
  • Small items must be in sealed boxes. We do not move plastic bags.

Payment and discounts

No deposit. Pay at the end by cash, money order, Visa or Mastercard (3% card fee). Returning customers and real-estate-agent referrals save 7%, and friend referrals 5%.

San Jose drop-offs: from ranch house to apartment

If you are moving from a Gilroy house into a San Jose apartment or townhome, plan for less space. Measure the new rooms before move day and decide what stays behind, because every piece that goes on the truck is carried twice. If the new building has an elevator, reserve it. Elevator waiting is billed time. If the HOA wants a certificate of insurance, we provide it free with the HOA name, mailing address and an email.
