MacArthur and Fruitvale
The Dimond District grows out of the intersection of MacArthur Boulevard and Fruitvale Avenue, just below I-580 in east-central Oakland. It has its own small business strip, a branch library and Dimond Park, where Sausal Creek runs through the trees. From there the residential streets climb toward Oakmore and the hills, while Glenview sits a short way west along Park Boulevard.
Pre-war houses on a slope
Most homes here were built between the 1910s and the 1940s: stucco Mediterranean-style houses with red-tile roofs, Craftsman and Tudor-style bungalows, and modest two-story homes on narrow lots. Uphill, many houses are set above or below the street, with a long set of exterior steps to the front door or a garage built into the hillside under the living space. Small apartment buildings and duplexes cluster closer to MacArthur.
Arched doorways, steep inside stairs and small closets are standard, so beds and tables usually come apart before they go out.
Many of these houses have been remodeled over the years, with a new kitchen or an added bathroom upstairs, while the original staircase stays as narrow as it always was. That is the measurement that matters most for a sectional, a king box spring or a tall armoire.
What the hills mean on move day
The real time cost in the Dimond is the carry from the front door to the truck. A long flight of outside steps adds time to every piece, and that is what the estimate reflects, since stairs carry no separate charge. Streets above MacArthur can be narrow and winding with cars on both sides. Our truck needs about 40 feet for itself and its ramp; if the curb near you cannot give that, David checks the address in advance and tells you whether a shuttle is needed.
Oakland numbers this season

Pricing for a Dimond bungalow
Three movers at $175 per hour is the usual crew for a two-bedroom bungalow with steps. A bigger hillside house, three bedrooms over 1,800 square feet or four bedrooms and up, gets 4 movers at $235. Two movers at $145 handle only very small moves. There is a 3-hour minimum, then billing in 15-minute steps, at the same rate on Saturday as on Tuesday.
What a Dimond District move has cost, by home size
Rather than quote a vague starting price, we pulled the hours from our own closed-out local moves to build the ranges shown here. Your home may land outside these numbers; the hourly rate times your actual time is what you pay.

|---|---|---|---|

From our closed local jobs for direct customers, July to October 2026: the middle half of billed hours by home size, including the drive between your two addresses and excluding account, partner-billed and full-packing jobs. Supplies are charged as used, with a 3-hour minimum.
A house with 30 or 40 outside steps takes longer per piece than a flat walk, so the carry from the front door to the truck decides where a Dimond move lands in these ranges.
Distance, arrival and drive time
The Dimond is about 37 miles northwest of downtown San Jose. Mornings in the East Bay have a 9-11 AM arrival window, with a crew call 30 minutes before arrival. Travel to your home costs nothing. When pickup and drop-off are more than 10 minutes apart, the drive between them is doubled under California rules.
Dimond District checklist
- Count the outside steps and mention them when you book the estimate.
- Move cars so the closest curb is free the morning of the move.
- Pack the hillside garage early; it is often full of stored items.
- Send a photo of anything over 300 pounds so David can confirm the plan.
- Ask the city whether your street needs a temporary no-parking permit; we help you plan it.
- Leave a clear path from the front door down to the street, including the side gate if the truck loads from below.
Neighboring areas
- Piedmont: large homes to the northwest.
- Montclair: winding hill streets further up.
- Adams Point: apartments near the lake.
- Lake Merritt: elevator buildings closer to downtown.

Questions and answers
My house has a long flight of outside steps. Do you charge per step?
No. There is no stair fee. Steps take time, and time is what we bill, so we see them at the estimate and plan the crew.
Can you get a truck up my narrow hill street?
Most streets are fine. If yours looks tight, David reviews it before move day and tells you if a shuttle is needed, which adds truck rental and labor.
Will you disconnect my washer and dryer?
We disconnect and move appliances, but someone from your side should be there for water and gas lines.
Do you move food from the fridge?
No. We do not move perishables or food from the fridge, so plan to use it up or move it yourself.
Is there a discount if a friend referred me?
Yes, 5% for a friend referral with their name or phone, and 7% for repeat customers or a real-estate-agent referral.
