Adams Point Movers for Lake Merritt's North Shore

Adams Point is the wedge of Oakland between Lake Merritt, Grand Avenue and I-580. Lakeside Park, the Gardens at Lake Merritt and Children's Fairyland take up the lake edge, and Bellevue Avenue curves along the water. Up the slope, Perkins, Vernon, Van Buren and the streets around them are packed with apartment buildings, which makes Adams Point one of the densest residential pockets in the East Bay. Grand Avenue supplies the groceries, cafes and the Grand Lake Theatre at its far end.

Because so many people rent here, moves into and out of Adams Point run all year, and lots of them are short: across the lake, to Uptown, or a few blocks to a bigger unit. A short local move still benefits from planning, since the building access, not the distance, sets the pace.

The housing here is mostly multi-unit: 1920s and 1930s apartment houses with ornate entries, Art Deco buildings, courtyard complexes, and plainer mid-century blocks with carports underneath. Many older buildings have small or no elevators, so a third-floor unit can mean three flights of narrow stairs with a turn at every landing. Where there is an elevator, it may be small enough that a sofa stands on end or goes by the stairs anyway.

The streets rise from the lake toward Grand and the freeway, and some blocks are steep enough that loading from the uphill or downhill side makes a real difference. Curb space is tight because so many residents share it. Our truck needs about 40 feet including the ramp, so it helps to know where the nearest stretch of open curb usually is.
