Big houses at the foot of the canyon

The Claremont district fills the southeast corner of Berkeley, where the flatlands meet the hills along the Oakland city line. Addresses here use ZIP 94705. Claremont Avenue runs through the neighborhood and climbs up Claremont Canyon toward Grizzly Peak Boulevard, while Ashby Avenue and Tunnel Road lead east to Highway 24 and the Caldecott Tunnel.

The neighborhood is known for large early twentieth-century houses: brown-shingle, Tudor, Mediterranean and Arts and Crafts designs on generous lots, with mature trees and landscaped gardens. Streets curve with the hillside rather than following a grid, and the higher you go, the more homes sit above the road on stepped paths.

The Elmwood shopping district on College Avenue is just to the west, Rockridge is south across the Oakland line, and the open space of Claremont Canyon rises behind the highest streets.

How a large-home move in Claremont runs

Most Claremont moves are full houses with a lot of furniture and a few pieces that need special care. This is the order we plan in:

  1. Three to four weeks ahead

    Walk through the house

Tell us room by room what is moving, including the basement, attic and garage. Flag the piano, antiques, art, mirrors and anything heavier than it looks.

  2. Two weeks ahead

    Decide on packing

Many households here have china, glassware, books and framed pieces. Decide whether the crew packs everything, only the fragile rooms, or nothing at all.

  3. A week ahead

    Plan the curb

Unless the driveway can take the truck, it needs the curb. Berkeley's Permit Service Center issues Temporary No Parking permits, and the signs must be posted 72 hours before the move.

  4. The day before

    Clear the path

Move cars off the street in front of the house and out of the driveway, and clear the front walk and steps. Let close neighbors know a truck will be on their curving street.

  5. Move morning

    Protect the house

The crew lays floor protection, pads banisters and door frames, and wraps each piece in moving blankets before it moves. Art and mirrors are boxed or padded first.

  6. Loading and delivery

Heavy and fragile pieces get their own plan

The heaviest items go on the truck with a clear route and enough hands. If the new home is not ready, part of the load can go to storage instead.

Claremont homes and what each asks for

01

Large period homes

Two or three floors, wide staircases but plenty of rooms, and basements and attics that hold years of belongings. These are the moves that most often need 4 movers.

02

Hillside houses above the street

Higher up, many homes are reached by a long set of garden steps from the curb. The carry is the planning focus, and we count the steps before move day.

03

Smaller houses and cottages

Some blocks near the Elmwood have smaller homes and in-law units. Access is easier, but older doorways still mean furniture comes apart.

04

Apartments and duplexes

A few small buildings and divided houses sit near the lower streets. Tell us the floor, the stairs and whether the entry is shared.

Claremont
moving FAQ.

Can a moving truck get onto the curving Claremont streets?

On most of them, yes. On the narrowest or steepest blocks, we stop on a wider, level stretch nearby or use a smaller truck. We look at the street before move day.

Do I need a parking permit for a Claremont move?

If the truck needs to hold curb space, yes. Berkeley's Permit Service Center issues Temporary No Parking permits, and the signs must be up 72 hours ahead. We can help with the permit hold.

How much does a Claremont move cost?

$145 an hour for 2 movers, $175 for 3 movers and $235 for 4 movers, with a 3-hour minimum, plus packing materials used.

Do you move pianos and antiques?

Yes. We pad and protect them and plan the route out of the house first. Tell us the type of piano and the steps between it and the truck when you ask for a quote.

Can you pack only the fragile rooms?

Yes. We can pack the kitchen, china and art and leave the rest to you, or pack the whole house. Materials are billed as used.
