A hill with stairs instead of streets

Telegraph Hill rises at the northeast corner of San Francisco with Coit Tower and Pioneer Park on top. On the bay side, the Filbert Steps and Greenwich Steps drop down toward Levi's Plaza and the Embarcadero through gardens, and some homes along them have no street frontage at all. On the North Beach side, the streets are steep and short, and several end at retaining walls or stairways. The wild parrots in the trees are part of the local identity, and so is the quiet: there is very little through traffic. Lower on the east slope, toward Battery and Sansome, the hill meets brick office buildings and newer housing along the waterfront, where elevators and garages make for a very different moving day than the cottages above.

What that means for furniture

Housing is a mix of small wooden cottages, older flats and apartment buildings, with a few newer condo buildings near the base. When a home sits on a pedestrian stairway, everything moves by hand from the closest street, up or down the steps. That is slow, careful work, and it is the main reason estimates here vary so much between two homes of the same size. That is why we price these homes from an on-site estimate. We do not do video estimates.

The 94133 numbers

Telegraph Hill shares ZIP 94133 with North Beach, Fisherman's Wharf and part of Chinatown. From mid-July to late October 2026 that ZIP sent us 3 public quote requests: two local, one long distance, and all of them one- or two-bedroom homes. Citywide, San Francisco produced 43 such requests in the same months.

Rates when every piece goes up the steps

Stairs are never charged as a line item. You pay the hourly crew rate for the time it takes: $175 an hour for three movers, which is the standard; $145 for two on a very small job; $235 for four on a three-bedroom over 1,800 square feet or a larger home. A 3-hour minimum applies, then 15-minute increments.

How long a Telegraph Hill move takes, and what it costs

For planning purposes, we measured our recent local moves by the hours on the final bill and turned them into the cost ranges below. Easy access and packed boxes pull a move toward the low end; the hourly rate times your actual time is what you pay.

Home sizeCrewTypical hoursTypical cost
Studio3 movers, $175/hr3.5 to 4 hours$613 to $700
1 bedroom3 movers, $175/hr3 to 4.5 hours$525 to $788
2 bedrooms3 movers, $175/hr4.5 to 7.75 hours$788 to $1,356
3 bedrooms, under about 1,800 sq ft3 movers, $175/hr7 to 12.5 hours$1,225 to $2,188
3 bedrooms over about 1,800 sq ft, or 4+ bedrooms4 movers, $235/hr7 to 12.5 hours$1,645 to $2,938

Hours are the middle half of billed hours on our recent local moves for direct customers, July to October 2026, including the drive between homes; account and partner-billed jobs and jobs with our full packing service are left out. Packing materials are extra, and every job has a 3-hour minimum ($525 with 3 movers).

When a home sits on a pedestrian stairway everything moves by hand from the closest street, which is why two Telegraph Hill homes of the same size can land at opposite ends of a row.

Parking where streets dead-end

The turnaround space at the top of many blocks is tight, and the curbs are usually full of residents' cars. The truck needs about 40 feet of legal curb with its ramp, and on this hill that usually means parking lower down and walking. If no legal space exists close enough, a temporary permit can be arranged; read the SF parking permit guide. Double-parking citations are added to the bill. David studies the access before the day and tells you if a shuttle is required.

How far we come

We are based in San Jose, about 43 miles to the southeast, and drive up US-101 or I-280 without charging for that trip. Our San Francisco arrival window is 9 to 11 AM, and you get a call about half an hour before the crew reaches you. If your next home is more than 10 minutes' drive away, the travel between the two addresses is doubled by state rule.

Plan for the hill

  • Walk the route from the nearest street to your door and count the steps.
  • Tell us about garden gates, low branches and narrow landings on the stairway.
  • Book the on-site estimate early so the crew size is right.
  • Pack fragile items in small, sturdy boxes that are easy to carry on steps.
  • Let neighbors on the stairway know the date, since the path will be busy.

Questions and answers

My house is only reachable by stairs. Can you move it?

Yes. The truck parks on the closest legal street and the crew carries everything along the stairway. We see it first at an on-site estimate.

Is there an extra fee for a long carry?

No. Long carries and stairs add time, which is billed at the hourly rate, but there is no separate charge.

Can you move my piano down the steps?

Send David a photo and the route. Grand pianos always take four movers, and any item over 300 pounds is confirmed by David before booking.

What time will the crew arrive?

For San Francisco the morning window is 9 to 11 AM, and the foreman calls about 30 minutes before arrival.

Is the rate higher on a Sunday?

No. We charge the same rate on every day of the week.
