Where people live among the office towers
The Financial District is San Francisco's office core, from Market Street up to the Transamerica Pyramid and from Kearny over to the Embarcadero. Fewer people live here than in the neighborhoods around it, but those who do are spread across distinct kinds of housing: condo towers and converted office buildings near Market and California, the Golden Gateway apartments and townhomes close to the waterfront and Embarcadero Center, and lofts in the brick buildings of Jackson Square, one of the few blocks to survive 1906. Each of those moves differently. A tower condo is mostly about the elevator booking, a Golden Gateway townhome about the walk from the nearest street, and a Jackson Square loft about wide open rooms with heavy, oversized furniture and sometimes an old freight lift.
