Some of the steepest blocks in the city, lanes that only stairs can reach and a cable car running up Hyde Street. We work out the truck spot and the carry before anything is loaded.
Call toll free1-877-417-6060Russian Hill rises between Van Ness Avenue on the west and North Beach on the east, with Nob Hill to the south and Fisherman's Wharf and Aquatic Park below its north slope. Most addresses are in ZIP 94109, and the eastern blocks toward Columbus Avenue fall in 94133. Polk Street runs along the western foot of the hill with shops and restaurants, and Hyde Street climbs over the top carrying the Powell-Hyde cable car.
The best-known block is the winding stretch of Lombard Street between Hyde and Leavenworth, which draws visitors and slow traffic most of the day. Just as typical, though less famous, are the stairways and pedestrian lanes. Macondray Lane and the Vallejo Street stairs near Ina Coolbrith Park are footpaths, not roads, and homes along them are reached on foot.

Taller apartment and condo buildings sit around the top of the hill, many with a lobby, an elevator and a management office. Ask about elevator booking and the certificate of insurance as soon as you have a date. We provide the COI.
Smaller buildings on the slopes often hold two to six units with a single shared staircase. Upper floors mean several flights each trip, so tell us the floor and whether there is an elevator.
Cottages and houses facing a pedestrian lane have no curb in front of them. The truck stops at the nearest street and the crew carries the rest of the way, up or down the steps.
On the steepest blocks the front door can be well above or below the sidewalk. Exterior stairs, split levels and narrow entry halls all add carrying time.
On Russian Hill the question is not only where there is curb space, but where a loaded truck can sit safely on the grade.
A lot of Russian Hill moves are short drives: down to the Marina or Cow Hollow, over to Nob Hill, or into a building on Polk Street. Each end still needs its own parking plan and its own count of stairs. Our local moving crews handle in-city moves and moves anywhere in the Bay Area.
Smaller homes on the hill often mean downsizing, and a gap between move-out and move-in is common. Packing and storage covers that. Leaving California? See long-distance moving.
Hourly rates: 2 movers are $145 an hour, 3 movers are $175 an hour and 4 movers are $235 an hour, with a 3-hour minimum. Packing materials are added only as used. On a hill with long carries, the crew size we recommend depends on the stairs and the distance from the truck.
Every full-service move includes moving blankets, tape, wardrobe boxes, floor protection, and taking apart and putting back together the furniture that needs it. Want help packing? Choose the Standard, Silver (+$35/hr) or Golden (+$70/hr) package. The moving cost guide explains how the hours add up.

Nob Hill and its doorman buildings are just south, Cow Hollow and the Marina sit to the west across Van Ness, and Pacific Heights is a short drive beyond them.

Yes. The truck parks on the nearest street where it can stop safely and the crew carries from there. Tell us about the lane, the steps and the distance when you request a quote so the time is planned correctly.
We keep the truck off the cable car line. For homes on Hyde, the reservation usually goes on a cross street with a gentler grade.
2 movers are $145 an hour, 3 movers $175 an hour and 4 movers $235 an hour, with a 3-hour minimum, plus packing materials used.
On most blocks it is the only dependable way to keep the truck close. The SFMTA authorizes temporary no-parking signs. Apply a week or more ahead and confirm current rules and fees at sfmta.com.
Many larger buildings ask for one. Get the requirements from management and send them to us. We provide the COI and coordinate the elevator time.
