Moving in Hayes Valley01 · The neighborhood

Level blocks between Civic Center and the Lower Haight

Hayes Valley sits just west of Civic Center, in ZIP 94102. Hayes Street is the main shopping block, lined with small boutiques and restaurants, and Patricia's Green, the small park on Octavia Boulevard, is its center. Octavia itself was rebuilt as a boulevard after the old Central Freeway spur was taken down, and it now carries traffic between Market Street and Fell Street.

The neighborhood borders Civic Center and the performing arts buildings on Van Ness to the east, the Lower Haight to the west and the Western Addition to the north, with Alamo Square a short walk northwest. Market Street marks the southern side. Compared with much of the city the ground is fairly level, so the hard part of a move here is usually traffic and curb space, not hills.

Housing stock02 · What we carry through

Old flats and new buildings, side by side

01

Victorian and Edwardian flats

Most of the older housing is two- and three-unit buildings with a separate door for each flat and a long, straight staircase to the upper units. Expect one or two full flights for anything above the ground floor.

02

Small apartment buildings

Older walk-ups with a shared entry and a narrow stair are common on the side streets. Many have no elevator, so the floor number matters when we estimate the time.

03

Newer mid-rise buildings

Recent apartment buildings along Octavia, Market and Van Ness usually have an elevator, a garage or loading area and set move hours. Ask management about booking the elevator and send us any certificate of insurance request.

04

Units above shops

Some flats sit over storefronts on Hayes Street and nearby blocks, entered through a street door between businesses. The stair tends to be steep and narrow, so large pieces may need to come apart.

Traffic, one-way streets and the curb

Several of the busiest streets in the area pass straight through Hayes Valley. That shapes where a truck can stop:

Common moves04 · Move types

Apartments, flats and first homes

Many Hayes Valley moves are apartment moves: a one-bedroom on Octavia to a larger flat in the Castro, or a walk-up near Alamo Square to a new building near Market Street. Each of those is a short drive with a stair or an elevator at both ends. Local moving covers those and any move within the Bay Area.

Art, mirrors and design furniture from the shops on Hayes Street come up often. Mention them when you call so the crew brings enough blankets and boxes. For a gap between leases, see packing and storage. For a move out of state, see long-distance moving.

Hayes Valley moving cost05 · Pricing
$145per hour · team of 2 movers

We charge by the hour: $145 for 2 movers, $175 for 3 movers and $235 for 4 movers, with a 3-hour minimum and packing materials billed as used. A studio or one-bedroom in an elevator building often needs a smaller crew than a top-floor walk-up.

Full-service moves include floor protection, moving blankets, tape, wardrobe boxes, and disassembly and reassembly of beds, tables and other furniture. Packing packages are Standard, Silver (+$35/hr) and Golden (+$70/hr). See the moving cost guide for what affects the hours.

Hayes Valley
moving FAQ.

Can the truck park on Fell or Oak Street?

We avoid it when we can. Both are busy one-way streets. A reserved stretch of curb on a nearby cross street is usually safer for loading.

Do I need a parking permit for a Hayes Valley move?

It is not required, but curb space is scarce on most blocks. The SFMTA authorizes temporary no-parking signs; apply a week or more ahead and check the posting rules and fees at sfmta.com.

How much does a Hayes Valley move cost?

2 movers are $145 an hour, 3 movers $175 an hour and 4 movers $235 an hour, with a 3-hour minimum, plus packing materials used.

My flat is above a shop with a narrow stair. Is that a problem?

No. Tell us the floor and measure the stair at its tightest point. Many pieces can be taken apart for the carry.

Do you work with newer buildings on Octavia and Market?

Yes. We provide the certificate of insurance and coordinate the elevator and loading area with building management.
