Timing over the pass
Weekday mornings, I-580 westbound over the Altamont is one of the region's busiest commute roads, carrying valley commuters into the Bay Area. A loaded truck heading east late morning is going the other way. In the afternoon the heavy traffic runs east, which is one more reason to have everything packed so loading goes quickly. South Bay and Peninsula pickups arrive 8 to 10 AM; East Bay pickups such as Fremont arrive 9 to 11 AM.
Over the Altamont Pass
Many Bay Area families move east over the Altamont Pass into the northern San Joaquin Valley for larger homes. We booked a Palo Alto to Oakdale move of about 75 miles in 2026 and have handled requests from San Jose to Manteca, Fremont to Tracy and Tracy to Patterson. These moves are done in one day and billed by the hour.
How the drive is billed
On a move this long, the drive is a large share of the bill. California's double drive time rule counts the drive between pickup and drop-off twice whenever they are more than 10 minutes apart, and on this lane they always are. Fremont to Manteca is about 45 miles, roughly an hour on the road, so double drive time adds about 2 billed hours. The rest of the bill is loading and unloading.
You do not pay for the crew's drive to your Bay Area pickup or for the return after unloading in the valley. There is no mileage or fuel charge.

Keep the crew size right
The drive is billed at the full crew rate, so the crew should match the home. Three movers is our standard team. We send 4 for a 3-bedroom over 1,800 sq ft or 4 bedrooms and up, and 2 only for a very small move or if you ask.
Valley drop-offs
- Newer subdivisions often have HOAs. Ask if they need a certificate of insurance; ours is free.
- Summer afternoons in the valley are hot. Set up fans or air conditioning first.
- Have keys and garage remotes for the new house in hand before the truck arrives.
Payment
No deposit is required. You pay at the end of the day by cash, money order, Visa or Mastercard; cards have a 3% fee. Real estate agent referrals get 7% off, and friend referrals 5%. Tell us when you book.

Is a move from Fremont to Manteca long distance?
No. We quote it as a local hourly move, billed by the hour with the drive between homes counted twice.
Do you charge for the drive back from Manteca?
No. Only the drive between your two homes is billed, counted twice.
