Polk Gulch is the low strip along Polk Street, squeezed between the slopes of Nob Hill to the east and Pacific Heights rising to the west. Van Ness Avenue runs one block over, and Larkin and Hyde frame the other side. The street itself is a long run of bars, cafes, nail salons, small grocers and repair shops with apartments stacked above them. Before the Castro became the center of gay San Francisco, this stretch held that role, and the neighborhood still has a lived-in, late-night feel.
What the buildings are like inside
Most homes here are rental apartments in three- to six-story buildings put up after 1906, many with bay windows and narrow lobbies. A good share have no elevator at all, so a fourth-floor one-bedroom means every box and dresser goes up the stairwell by hand. Where there is an elevator, it is often an older cab that fits a loveseat on end and little else, so sofas and tall bookcases may still take the stairs. Units above shops usually share a street door with the business below, which makes the entry itself the first tight spot of the day.
Curb space on a busy commercial street
Polk carries a bike lane and steady bus and delivery traffic, and the side streets climb steeply in both directions. Parking a 26-foot truck with room for its ramp takes roughly 40 feet of legal curb, which is hard to find here on short notice. When there is no legal place to stop, a temporary parking permit can be arranged; our SF parking permit guide explains how that works. If the truck has to double-park, any citation is added to the bill, which is one more reason to plan the curb ahead. David looks at the block on Google Maps before move day and tells you if a shuttle would be needed.
Requests from across the city
The ZIP code that covers Polk Gulch, 94109, gave us too few public quote requests this season to report on its own. Citywide, San Francisco sent 43 quote requests between mid-July and late October 2026, not counting account work, and 28 of them were booked or completed. One-bedroom homes were the most common size at 13, with two-bedroom homes close behind at 12, followed by studios.
Pricing a walk-up move
Three movers at $175 an hour is the normal crew for a Polk Gulch apartment, and that rate covers the whole team and the truck. A very small studio move can go with two movers at $145, and a three-bedroom flat over 1,800 square feet or anything with four bedrooms gets four movers at $235. You pay for at least 3 hours, then 15-minute steps. Stairs are not surcharged, they simply take time, and the same is true of waiting on a slow elevator.
Polk Gulch moving cost by home size

Source: final invoices on our own local moves for direct customers, July to October 2026, middle half of each size group, not counting account or partner-billed jobs or jobs where we packed the whole home. Materials are billed as used; minimum 3 hours, then 15-minute increments.
Many buildings have no elevator, so a fourth-floor one-bedroom means every box goes up the stairwell by hand, which is what moves a Polk Gulch job up its row.
The drive up from San Jose
Our crews leave from San Jose, about 43 miles southeast, and come up US-101 or I-280. You are not charged for that trip. Our morning arrival window for San Francisco is 9 to 11 AM, and the foreman calls about 30 minutes before the truck pulls up. If your new place is more than 10 minutes away, California rules double the drive time between the two addresses.
Before the crew arrives on Polk
- Count the flights of stairs at both ends and tell us when you book.
- Ask your landlord whether the building has move hours or wants a certificate of insurance; we send COIs free with the manager name, mailing address and email.
- Measure the stair landing turns against your largest sofa.
- Decide early whether the curb needs a temporary permit.
- If the street door is shared with a shop, let the business know your move date.

Questions and answers
My building has no elevator. Does that cost extra?
No separate stair fee. Carrying up and down flights simply adds time, and the job is billed by the hour.
Can the truck stop in the Polk Street bike lane?
No. We look for legal curb space on Polk or a side street, and if none is likely we help you plan a temporary parking permit.
Will my sectional fit in an old elevator?
Often not. The crew checks the cab size and, if needed, carries the pieces up the stairs instead, taking legs and arms off where they come off.
Do you move on Saturday and Sunday?
Yes, and the hourly rate is the same as on weekdays.
What do I need to give my building manager?
Usually a certificate of insurance. We provide it free once we have the management name, mailing address and email.
