How many movers do I need?

How many movers you need for a studio, 1, 2, 3 or 4-bedroom Bay Area move, why 3 movers usually beat 2, and what a 4th mover adds to the bill.

By Spartan Moving Systems · Updated October 2026 · Cal-T #0190543

Our crew rule

Three movers for most homes up to a 3-bedroom of 1,800 square feet. Four movers for a 3-bedroom over 1,800 square feet and for every home with 4 or more bedrooms. Two movers only for very small moves, such as a few pieces of furniture or a lightly furnished studio. Grand and baby grand pianos always get four.

That is the rule Spartan uses when it quotes, and it matches what actually happened on our jobs: of the 70 local moves between July and October 2026 where crew size was recorded, not counting account work, 63% used 3 movers, 29% used 4 and 6% used 2.

Data: 77 local moves Spartan completed and closed between July 16 and October 17, 2026, not counting account work (jobs booked through a business account or moving broker) or test entries. Billed hours are the hours on the final invoice, including any double drive time. Home size was recorded on 58 of those jobs.

Why 3 movers usually cost less than 2

A 2-mover crew has the lowest hourly rate, which makes it look cheapest. Per person it is the most expensive:

CrewHourly rateCost per mover-hour
2 movers$145$72.50
3 movers$175$58.33
4 movers$235$58.75

With three people, one can stay in the truck stacking while two carry, so the truck never waits. With two, every heavy piece takes both movers and the truck sits idle during each trip. On anything bigger than a small studio, the job usually runs long enough that the cheaper hourly rate is wiped out. That is why we quote 3 movers by default and suggest 2 only when the move is genuinely small.

Moving only a few items? The 3-hour minimum applies either way, so a 2-mover crew at $145 per hour ($435 minimum) can be the better fit.

What a 4th mover adds

A 4th mover adds $60 per hour to the rate ($235 vs $175). The extra hands earn their keep when there is enough carrying to keep four people busy: large houses, long walks from the door to the truck, several flights of stairs, or a lot of heavy furniture. That is why 3-bedroom homes over 1,800 square feet and every home with 4 or more bedrooms get four.

Keep the drive in mind too. Under California's double drive time rule, the drive between your two homes is billed twice, at the full crew rate. If the drive is 90 minutes, that is 3 billed hours, and at the 4-mover rate those 3 hours cost $180 more than with three movers. On long local moves, such as to Sacramento, Santa Cruz or the far end of the Bay, ask us how crew size affects your total.

Special items that change the crew

  • Grand and baby grand pianos: always 4 movers. A job that is only a grand piano has a 4-hour minimum.
  • Upright pianos: 4 movers if there is a flight of stairs, otherwise 3, with the normal minimum.
  • Very heavy items such as safes, large stone tables or appliances over about 300 lb: send us a photo first; we confirm whether we can move it and whether to add a mover.

See our piano moving page for more.

One truck or two?

Our trucks are 26 ft, 26,000 lb GVW, the largest non-CDL truck used for local moves, and hold about 1,750 cubic feet in one trip. That is enough for most homes. If a very large home needs more than one truckload, we plan for it at the quote.

What we need to size your crew

  1. Number of bedrooms and approximate square footage.
  2. Stairs, elevators and how far the truck can park from each door.
  3. Whether you are packing yourself or want help.
  4. Any piano, safe or unusually heavy item.

Send those with your date and ZIP codes and we confirm the crew and rate in writing. For big or unusual homes we offer a free on-site inspection. Call 1-877-417-6060.

Crew size vs. hours in our data

4 movers207.55.5 to 10.5 hrs
2 movers43.753.5 to 7 hrs

Four-mover jobs ran longer than three-mover jobs, which is expected: they were mostly the bigger homes.

Who actually shows up

Every Spartan crew is led by a foreman who runs the job: he oversees the loading, takes apart the furniture that needs it, does a final inspection with you before the team leaves and takes payment at the end. The other movers are helpers who wrap, carry and stack. Our movers are Spartan's own team, and the newest member of the crew has been with us since 2014. When we say 3 movers, that is the foreman plus two helpers, and the hourly rate covers all of them and the truck.

Questions and answers

How many movers do I need for a 2-bedroom apartment?

Three. In our 2026 data the median 2-bedroom move took about 6.4 billed hours with a 3-mover crew at $175 per hour.

How many movers for a 3-bedroom house?

Three if the home is under 1,800 square feet, four if it is over 1,800 square feet.

Can I hire just 2 movers to save money?

For very small moves, yes, at $145 per hour. For most homes 3 movers cost less overall because the job finishes faster and the cost per mover-hour is lower.

Is the hourly rate per mover?

No. The rate is for the whole crew and the truck together.

How many movers for a piano?

A grand or baby grand always gets 4 movers. An upright gets 4 if there are stairs, otherwise 3.
