A coastal town reached by two scenic roads: Highway 92 over the hills from San Mateo, and Highway 1 along the ocean. Answers to what people ask before a Half Moon Bay move.
Call toll free1-877-417-6060On the San Mateo County coast, west of San Mateo across the Santa Cruz Mountains. It is the largest town on the coastside, with ZIP 94019. Main Street is the historic downtown, and farms, nurseries and open land surround the town.
North of the city are the unincorporated coastside communities of Miramar, El Granada, Princeton, Moss Beach and Montara, along with Pillar Point Harbor. South of town, Highway 1 follows the coast toward Santa Cruz.
By one of two roads. Highway 92 climbs from Interstate 280 and San Mateo over the hills and drops down into town; it is two lanes for much of the way, with steep grades and curves. Highway 1 comes down the coast from Pacifica through the Tom Lantos Tunnels at Devil's Slide.
Highway 92 gets heavy on weekends, and very heavy on fall weekends when visitors come for the pumpkin farms and the town's harvest events. Weekday commute hours are busy too. A weekday move that starts early keeps the drive on both ends shorter.
A mix. There are older houses near Main Street, subdivisions of single-family homes and townhomes, homes near the bluffs and the beach, and rural properties with long driveways, some of them unpaved. Each one changes where the truck can stop and how far the crew carries.
Most Half Moon Bay homes have a driveway or space in front of the house. If the truck must hold curb space on a city street, the City of Half Moon Bay sets the rules. Outside city limits, the coastside roads are county roads. We check what applies to your address.
Fog, mist and ocean wind are common, especially in summer. We keep boxes dry, put mattresses in covers, and wrap upholstered furniture before it goes outside.

Many coastside moves start or end over the hill, so the route matters as much as the address:
| Area | Typical homes | Route | Planning focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Half Moon Bay | Downtown houses, subdivisions, rural lots | Highway 92 or Highway 1 | Weekend traffic, long driveways |
| Midcoast towns | Single-family homes on hillside streets | Highway 1, north of town | Narrow streets, slopes |
| Pacifica | Valley tract homes and hillside houses | Highway 1 through Devil's Slide | One-highway access, fog |
| San Mateo | Houses, condos and apartments | Highway 92 to Interstate 280 or US 101 | Building rules, curb space |
| Hillsborough | Large homes on big lots | Highway 92 to Interstate 280 | Long driveways, careful handling |

Half Moon Bay moves are billed at our standard hourly rates: 2 movers at $145, 3 at $175 and 4 at $235, with a 3-hour minimum, plus packing materials used. The drive over Highway 92 is part of the day, so a weekday start outside traffic helps keep the total down.
Every full-service move includes floor protection, moving blankets, tape, wardrobe boxes and furniture disassembly and reassembly. Bikes, scooters, surfboards and garage gear are wrapped and loaded too. See the moving cost guide for what drives the hours, or long-distance moving if you are leaving California.
Pacifica is north up the coast through the Devil's Slide tunnels, San Mateo and Hillsborough are over the hill on Highway 92, and Foster City is at the far end of 92 across US 101.

Yes. Highway 92 is a normal route for a moving truck. It is steep and winding in places, so the load is strapped for the grades and we avoid the busiest weekend hours when we can.
$145 an hour for 2 movers, $175 for 3 movers and $235 for 4 movers, with a 3-hour minimum, plus packing materials used.
Yes. We move homes in El Granada, Miramar, Princeton, Moss Beach and Montara as well as Half Moon Bay itself.
It can be slow. Fall weekends bring heavy visitor traffic on Highway 92, so a weekday is usually faster if your dates allow it.
Usually not. Tell us how long it is and whether a large truck can turn around at the top, and we plan the truck size and the carry.
