What should I do to get ready before the movers arrive?

Box everything in sealed cartons, empty drawers and the fridge, keep valuables with you, and arrange COI, elevator and parking before move day.

Do I need to take the beds apart myself?

No. Our crew takes apart and rebuilds beds, sectionals and dining tables as part of the move.

What about the food in my pantry?

Unopened, non-perishable items can be boxed like anything else. Anything perishable, refrigerated or frozen stays behind.

Should I unplug and drain the washer?

We disconnect appliances, but someone from your household should be there while water or gas lines are handled.

Do I need to tip the crew?

Tips are never required. If you choose to, 10-20% is customary and it goes straight to the movers.

The essentials

Have everything in sturdy, sealed boxes, empty the drawers and the refrigerator, keep valuables with you, and sort out building paperwork and parking ahead of time. A ready home lets the crew start loading the minute they walk in.

In the days before

  • Box it all. No plastic bags; they tear and do not stack. Seal each box with tape.
  • Empty dresser drawers. The foreman may let light clothing stay if it is safe, but plan to empty them.
  • Clear the fridge and freezer. We do not move perishable or frozen food.
  • Seal liquids. Cleaning supplies and bottles go in a closed box, upright.
  • Measure the TV. A TV box is available up to 75 inches; tell us the size.
  • Photograph anything over 300 pounds and send it, so David can confirm the plan.

Building and parking

  • Ask both buildings whether they need a certificate of insurance and send us their details
  • Reserve the elevator for the window you were given
  • Save about 40 feet of curb for the truck and ramp; in San Francisco a permit can be processed through SFMTA when there is no legal spot

On the morning itself

  • Keep passports, jewelry, medication and important papers with you, not on the truck
  • Put screws and bolts from anything you took apart in a labeled bag taped to the piece
  • Have the phone number of whoever will meet the crew at each address ready
  • Set aside a box of first-night things you will open right away
