01Moves that run on the academic calendar

Illustration of Palo Alto, part of the Spartan Moving service area

Stanford is not a city. It is a university campus and an unincorporated community next to Palo Alto and Menlo Park, with its own ZIP code, 94305. People who live there move on a schedule set by the school: graduate students arriving before fall quarter, postdocs starting appointments, families moving into faculty housing, and everyone leaving when a degree or a contract ends.

Those moves are often smaller than a typical Bay Area house move, and they are often tied to a storage unit, an apartment off campus or a cross-country trip. In September 2026, for example, we moved a household from a storage unit in San Jose to Stanford with a two-mover crew.

02Which crew for which Stanford move

MoveCrewRate
Studio, single room, or a storage unit with few large items2 movers$145/hr
One- or two-bedroom apartment, most family apartments3 movers$175/hr
Faculty or family house: 3 bedrooms over about 1,800 sq ft, or 4+ bedrooms4 movers$235/hr

Every local move has a 3-hour minimum, then 15-minute increments. Two movers is for very small moves only. For most apartments, three movers usually work out better. The rates are the same every day, weekends included.

03Before a campus move

  • Ask your housing office or residence manager about move-in and move-out rules: allowed hours, where a truck may stop, and whether the building needs anything from the mover. Rules on campus are set by the university, not by us.
  • If the building has an elevator, ask whether you can reserve it. Elevator waiting is billed as part of the job time.
  • If you are coming from a storage unit, check the facility's gate hours and bring your access code.
  • If you need a certificate of insurance for a building or HOA, we issue it free with the name, mailing address and email.

04What is included

Moving blankets, tape, wardrobe boxes, floor protection and furniture disassembly and reassembly are included. Boxes, mattress covers and bubble wrap are charged only as used, and the truck carries extra supplies. We do not charge for driving to campus. When pickup and drop-off are more than 10 minutes apart, California rules apply double drive time between them. A storage unit pickup on the way costs no extra fee, only the time.

Stanford moving cost by home size

Since every home is billed by the clock, we compared homes of the same size across our recent local jobs and laid the results out by home size below. Easy access and packed boxes pull a move toward the low end; the final cost is billed hourly for the time your move actually takes.

Home sizeCrewTypical hoursTypical cost
Studio3 movers, $175/hr3.5 to 4 hours$613 to $700
1 bedroom3 movers, $175/hr3 to 4.5 hours$525 to $788
2 bedrooms3 movers, $175/hr4.5 to 7.75 hours$788 to $1,356
3 bedrooms, under about 1,800 sq ft3 movers, $175/hr7 to 12.5 hours$1,225 to $2,188
3 bedrooms over about 1,800 sq ft, or 4+ bedrooms4 movers, $235/hr7 to 12.5 hours$1,645 to $2,938

Figures use the middle half of billed hours from local moves we completed for direct customers July through October 2026, drive time between homes included, account and full-pack jobs left out. Boxes and other supplies are extra, and no job bills under 3 hours.

Most student and postdoc moves fall in the studio to two-bedroom rows. Faculty houses are the ones that reach the bottom of the table.

05Leaving Stanford for another state

Graduation and the end of an appointment often mean a long-distance move. Interstate moves are priced by weight, not by the hour, and a flat-fee option gives you a guaranteed price and dates. See long-distance moving for how that works. If your new place is not ready, we store your things at a flat monthly fee and deliver later.

Stanford is surrounded by Palo Alto, Old Palo Alto and Menlo Park, with Portola Valley and Los Altos Hills in the hills behind it.

FAQQuestions and answers

Do you move graduate students at Stanford?

Yes. Small apartment and room moves are exactly what a two- or three-mover crew is for. The 3-hour minimum applies.

Can two movers handle my move?

For a studio, a single room or a small storage unit, often yes, at $145 per hour. Most one-bedroom apartments and larger get three movers.

Do you know the campus housing rules?

Campus rules come from the university and can change. Check with your housing office about hours and truck access, and tell us what they say so we can plan.

What time will you arrive?

Morning jobs on the Peninsula have an ETA window of 8 to 10 AM. The crew calls 30 minutes before arrival.

Can you pick up from a storage unit first?

Yes. There is no fee for an extra stop on a local move, only the time it takes.

Do you offer a discount for a referral?

Yes, 5% when a friend or past customer refers you, with their name or phone number. Repeat customers get 7%.
