01

The piece most likely to get stuck

The sofa is often the piece people worry about, and for good reason: it is the one most likely to meet a tight turn on a Victorian staircase, a narrow apartment hallway or a low ceiling on a landing. Fortunately, most modern sofas and almost all sectionals are designed to come apart, and our crews take them apart and put them back together all the time.

02

Sectionals come apart, and go back together

Disassembly and reassembly of sectional sofas is included in the hourly rate, like beds and dining tables. The sections are unclipped or unbolted, each one wrapped in moving blankets, carried separately and reconnected at the new home. Removing the legs often buys the extra inch that gets a sofa through a door. Hardware is bagged and kept with the piece.

03

Every sofa is wrapped

All furniture, couches included, is wrapped with moving blankets and tape at no extra charge. You do not need the Silver Package for a sofa. Silver is about mattress covers and packing materials for bulky fragile items like TVs, mirrors and glass tops, so for a home whose main pieces are a couch, dresser and a chest, the blankets already cover it.

04

When a sofa does not fit

Measure before you buy, and measure before you move. Check the width of the narrowest door, the height of the stairwell ceiling at its lowest point, and any tight turn. If the numbers are close, tell us when you book. If a sofa genuinely cannot get in, through a window or around a bend, the foreman will tell you on site rather than force it and damage the sofa, the walls or both. That is when people choose to store it, sell it or give it away.

05

Cost

There is no sofa fee. A sofa or sectional is part of the move at $175 per hour for 3 movers or $235 for 4, the same any day of the week, with a 3-hour minimum. Stairs and long carries add time, not a fee. Moving a single couch on its own is not something we typically offer, because the 3-hour minimum makes it poor value, but ask if you are a returning customer.

06

Sleeper sofas and recliners

A sofa bed has a heavy metal frame folded inside. The mechanism is tied or taped closed so it cannot spring open while the sofa is carried on end. Power recliners have motors and cords: unplug them, tie the cord up, and tell the crew which seats recline so they are not lifted by the moving parts. Some recliner backs lift off, which makes a heavy piece much easier on stairs.

07

Before the crew arrives

  • Take off loose cushions and throw pillows and put them in a box or bag inside a box.
  • Find the sectional connectors and note how they clip together.
  • Clear the path from the living room to the door.
  • Vacuum under and behind the sofa; it is often the only time it moves.
  • Measure the new room so the sofa goes straight to its place.
