Moving up the Peninsula into the city
Most people picture the move from the city down to the suburbs, but plenty of households go the other way. In 2026 we completed moves into San Francisco from Menlo Park and Hillsborough. Some are people going from a Peninsula apartment to a city flat, others are trading a house for a condo.
What these moves took
| From | Home | Billed hours | At 3 movers, $175/hr |
|---|---|---|---|
| Menlo Park | home | 5.75 | $1,006.25 |
| Hillsborough | 1 bedroom | 6.5 | $1,137.50 |
Hours include the drive, counted twice. Dollar figures recompute the hours at today's 3-mover rate and leave out supplies.
The San Francisco end is the hard end
Loading a Peninsula apartment with a parking lot is quick. Unloading in San Francisco often is not: steep blocks, a third-floor walk-up, a garage door that is too low for the truck, or no curb space at all. Plan the drop-off like the main event. Measure doorways and stairwells, reserve the elevator if there is one, and look at our parking permit guide if the block has no legal spot for a 26 ft truck plus ramp (about 40 feet).
Timing the drive north
Peninsula pickups have an 8 to 10 AM arrival window, so the truck usually heads north late morning, after the inbound commute. Palo Alto to downtown San Francisco is about 35 miles on US-101 or I-280. The drive between your two addresses is billed twice; the drive to your pickup is free. A 50-minute drive adds 100 minutes of billed time, so it pays to have the truck loaded fast.
Downsizing into a city flat
If the new place is smaller, sort before the move. Every piece you leave behind is one less piece carried up San Francisco stairs. Elevator waiting time and long walks from the truck are billed as time, not as separate fees.
Splitting the move between storage and the city
Some Peninsula households send part of their furniture to a storage unit and the rest to a smaller city apartment. That works well as one move with an extra stop. Local moves have no extra-stop fee; you pay for the time the stop adds. Load the storage items last so they come off first. If you need us to store items, our storage is billed flat monthly in 30-day periods, climate-controlled and never discounted.
Questions and answers
- How long does a Palo Alto to San Francisco move take?
Our two completed 2026 Peninsula-to-city moves took 5.75 and 6.5 billed hours, including the drive counted twice. One was a one-bedroom from Hillsborough; the other was a Menlo Park home. Your time depends on the size of the home and the access at the San Francisco end.
- What time will you arrive in Palo Alto?
Peninsula pickups have an 8 to 10 AM window, and the crew calls 30 minutes before.
- Is there a fee for stairs at my San Francisco flat?
No stairs fee. Stairs only add time.
- What if the truck cannot park in front of my new building?
A temporary permit can be processed through SFMTA. Without legal parking, a double-parking ticket is added to the bill.
- Can part of my furniture go to storage on the same day?
Yes. Add the storage unit as an extra stop. There is no stop fee on local moves, only the time.
