Cottages, bungalows and small apartment buildings

The housing here is older and more varied than in the post-war tracts to the north. You see Victorian-era cottages, Craftsman and Mission Revival bungalows, small duplexes and fourplexes, and two- and three-story apartment buildings from the 1960s and later, with newer townhomes filling in where older lots were redeveloped. Lots are narrow and many houses have detached garages at the back.

Older houses mean older doorways, steep little stairs to an attic room, and wood floors worth protecting. Walk-up apartments mean exterior stair runs, sometimes two or three flights, with no elevator at all. Both take time, and time is how we bill, so it helps to know about them early.

The oldest part of town

Old Mountain View is the residential area just south of downtown, spreading out from Castro Street toward El Camino Real. The Caltrain and light rail station sits at the north end of Castro, Pioneer Park and the public library are a block off it, and the streets on either side, roughly from Shoreline Boulevard over toward Calderon Avenue, are lined with older houses and mature trees. It is one of the few places in the city where you can walk from your front door to dinner, the train and the farmers market.

Getting here from our base

We are based in San Jose, about 11 miles to the east. Mountain View is on our South Bay schedule, with an 8 to 10 AM arrival window, and the foreman calls 30 minutes before arrival. Getting to you costs nothing. When the second address is more than 10 minutes away, state rules double the drive time between pickup and drop-off; a short move within Mountain View usually avoids that.

Mountain View demand, citywide

We had no requests from ZIP 94041 itself between mid-July and late October 2026, so here is the citywide picture. Mountain View as a whole sent us 9 quote requests in that period, all local, and 3 have booked or completed. The sizes ranged from studios to a four-bedroom house, with two-bedrooms the most common.

Hourly rates for a downtown-area move

A studio or one-bedroom walk-up can sometimes be done by 2 movers at $145 an hour, but most homes here are a 3-mover job at $175. A three-bedroom house over 1,800 square feet, or anything with four bedrooms, is priced with 4 movers at $235. The minimum is 3 hours, billing after that is by the quarter hour, and the rate does not change on weekends. Stairs and long carries are not a separate fee; they simply add time.

What an Old Mountain View move has cost, by home size

We took the hours actually billed on Bay Area moves we finished this summer and fall, so the totals below are the hours times the rate. Your own bill is the time your move actually takes.

Home sizeCrewTypical hoursTypical cost
Studio3 movers, $175/hr3.5 to 4 hours$613 to $700
1 bedroom3 movers, $175/hr3 to 4.5 hours$525 to $788
2 bedrooms3 movers, $175/hr4.5 to 7.75 hours$788 to $1,356
3 bedrooms, under about 1,800 sq ft3 movers, $175/hr7 to 12.5 hours$1,225 to $2,188
3 bedrooms over about 1,800 sq ft, or 4+ bedrooms4 movers, $235/hr7 to 12.5 hours$1,645 to $2,938

Middle 50% of billed hours on recent local moves for direct customers (July to October 2026), with the drive between homes counted as billed. Account and partner-billed jobs and moves that included our full packing are not in these numbers. Packing supplies extra; 3-hour minimum.

An empty detached garage and a clear path down the side of the house are the easiest ways to keep a cottage move here toward the low end of its row.

Parking near Castro Street

Streets close to downtown fill with restaurant and train traffic, and some blocks have time limits or permit parking. A 26-foot truck needs about 40 feet of curb for the truck and ramp, so we look at the block during the estimate and tell you if you should hold space with your own cars the night before. If the truck must use public curb space, check with the city whether a temporary no-parking permit is needed; we help you plan it. Double-parking citations are added to the bill, which is one more reason to sort this out early.

Old Mountain View checklist

  • Count the flights of stairs at both addresses and mention them when you call.
  • Empty the detached garage or back shed a week before.
  • Ask your landlord for move-out rules if you rent in a small building.
  • Avoid the Sunday farmers market morning if you live right by the station lot.
  • Keep jewelry, papers and medication with you rather than in the truck.

Questions and answers

Can you move a studio apartment with just two movers?

Yes. Two movers at $145 an hour is meant for very small moves like a studio with few items. The 3-hour minimum still applies.

My building has three flights and no elevator. Is there a stair fee?

No. We do not charge separately for stairs; they add time, and time is billed hourly.

Do you take apart a bed that will not fit up the attic stairs?

Yes. Disassembly and reassembly are included on a full-service move, and the crew wraps the parts in blankets.

What if the truck gets a parking ticket outside my house?

A double-parking citation is added to the bill, so we plan the truck spot with you during the estimate.

Are tips expected?

Tips are never required. If you choose to tip, it goes directly to the movers.
