Mirrors: the item that has to be boxed

Large mirrors must travel boxed. Spartan builds custom crates from boxes for floor, wall and dresser mirrors, charged as used. Bay Area, $175/hr for 3.

Silver Package or as used?

If you have one mirror, buying the crate materials as used is the simple answer. If you have several mirrors plus TVs, large frames or glass tabletops, compare it with the Silver Package. Silver adds $35 per hour across the whole move and covers packing materials for all bulky fragile items plus mattress covers. You do not choose upfront: at the end of the move we can work out both totals and switch you to whichever is lower. The base rate is $175 per hour for 3 movers or $235 for 4, with a 3-hour minimum and 15-minute increments after that.

Why mirrors get special treatment

A mirror is a sheet of glass with a silvered back, and unlike a framed print there is nothing between the glass and the world. A blanket wrap alone is not enough: a corner of a dresser or a strap can crack it, and a broken mirror in a truck damages everything near it. That is why mirrors are on our short list of items that must be packed inside a box, together with TVs and lamps. You can pack them yourself, or our crew does it for you.

Custom crates built from boxes

Mirrors rarely match a stock box size. A tall floor mirror, an arched mantel mirror, a round entry mirror and the mirror attached to a vanity dresser are all different shapes. So the crew builds a crate for each one out of cardboard boxes, cut and taped to fit snugly around the frame, with padding on the face and the corners. The materials are charged as used, at the prices on the packing materials list that comes with your quote, and the price depends on the size of the mirror.

Mirrors attached to furniture

Dresser and vanity mirrors are usually bolted to the back of the piece with brackets. The crew takes the mirror off as part of the normal disassembly, crates it separately, and puts it back on at the new home. That disassembly and reassembly is included in the hourly rate like any other furniture. The drawers of that dresser need to be emptied first, for safety; the foreman can decide on site whether light clothing can stay.

What you can do to help

  • Count your mirrors, including closet doors that come off, and mention them in your quote request.
  • Leave wall mirrors hanging; the crew takes them down and crates them.
  • Clear the floor around big floor mirrors so they can be wrapped in place.
  • Small hand and makeup mirrors go in a box with clothing or towels around them.
  • Keep the mounting hardware in a labeled bag taped to the crate.

Valuation

Basic valuation at $0.60 per pound per article is included free on every move. For an antique or designer mirror where that would not cover a replacement, full value protection can be bought directly from Baker International at bakerintl.com with our mover ID 17421.

Questions and answers

Do mirrors need to be in a box?

Yes. Mirrors, like TVs and lamps, must be packed inside a box. We build custom crates from boxes, charged as used.

Will you take the mirror off my dresser?

Yes. It is part of disassembly and reassembly, which is included in the hourly rate. The mirror is crated separately.

Can I just wrap my mirror in a blanket?

No. Blankets protect wood furniture, but a mirror needs a box or crate around the glass.

Does the Silver Package include mirror crates?

Yes. Silver covers packing materials for bulky fragile items such as mirrors, TVs, large frames and glass tops.
