Moving a safe: photo first, then a straight answer
Moving a gun safe or home safe in the Bay Area: send a photo and the weight, and David confirms whether we can move it and with how many movers.

A safe is the one household item where size tells you almost nothing. A small fire safe can weigh less than a dresser; a tall gun safe can weigh many times more than any piece of furniture in the house. So we do not quote safes blind. If you have a safe, send us a photo and, if you know it, the make, model or weight. David will look at it and confirm whether our crew can move it and whether to add a mover. That is our rule for anything around 300 pounds or more, and most gun safes are in that range.
What we need to know
- A photo of the safe, and ideally the label or model number inside the door.
- Its location: garage, closet, upstairs bedroom, basement.
- Whether it is bolted to the floor or wall.
- Stairs, steps or slopes between the safe and the truck at both homes.
- Where it should go at the new home and what the floor is made of.
With that, David can tell you yes, no, or what has to happen first. If it is bolted down, the bolts need to be removed before move day by you or a locksmith.
When the answer is no
Some safes and heavy pieces are beyond what a moving crew should carry. When an item would require specialized equipment or a flatbed truck, we say so and recommend a company that specializes in heavy items. We once declined a pizza oven of about one metric ton for exactly that reason. It is better to hear that during the quote than on move day. If the safe goes with a specialist, we still move the rest of the house as planned.
How a safe changes the quote
There is no flat safe fee in our pricing. A safe changes two things: the crew size and the time. If David decides the safe needs a fourth mover, the hourly rate is $235 for 4 movers instead of $175 for 3, for the whole job, with the same 3-hour minimum and 15-minute increments. Moving the safe itself, including stairs, is billed as time. Nothing is charged for the stairs as such.
Empty it first
Empty the safe completely before the crew arrives. Firearms, ammunition, cash, jewelry and documents should be moved by you, not left inside. An empty safe is lighter and safer to carry, and the contents of a safe are exactly the kind of valuables we ask every customer to keep with them on moving day. Leave the door locked or secured so it cannot swing open while the safe is tilted.
Floors and access
Moving a heavy safe puts real load on floors, thresholds and stair treads. Our standard floor protection is carpet runners and moving blankets; tell us about soft hardwood, tile or a fragile entry so the foreman can plan the route. The truck needs about 40 feet of curb for the truck and ramp. If the street is tight, David checks access before move day and tells you whether a shuttle would be needed.
Questions and answers
Do you move gun safes?
Often, yes, but always after David sees a photo and confirms. Items around 300 pounds or more are confirmed case by case.
Is there an extra fee for a safe?
No flat fee. It may need a 4-mover team ($235 per hour) and it adds time.
Can you move the safe with my guns inside?
No. Empty it first. Firearms, ammunition and valuables should travel with you.
What if the safe is too heavy?
If it would need specialized equipment or a flatbed, we will tell you and recommend a heavy-item specialist.
